How To Identify A Cockroach

In St. Charles, there are three types of cockroaches that you are most likely to find in your home. These cockroaches share some of the same habits and behaviors. However, several unique physical features help set them apart from the other cockroach species. Here is a look at the common cockroaches found in this area:

  • American cockroach: This is the largest type of cockroach in this area and can measure anywhere from 1 ½ to over 2 inches long. They typically have reddish-brown bodies with two yellow circles on the back of their head. This type of cockroach is commonly found near water and can come into your home through drainage pipes.
  • German cockroach: The German cockroach is the most common type of roach in this area. German cockroaches are common in homes, restaurants, hotels, and other commercial locations. The male German cockroach usually has a light tan body, while the female will be a shade or two darker. Both males and females have two dark stripes that run down their backs.
  • Oriental cockroach: This roach has a shiny black body about an inch long. Oriental roaches are also known as "water bugs" because they like to hang out near water or moist areas.

Cockroaches lay egg sacs, or oothecae, that hold up to 30 eggs. Because they are able to reproduce at such a high rate, it will not take long for your roach problem to turn into a severe cockroach infestation.

Cockroaches Trigger Allergies And Spread Disease

Cockroaches are dirty and disgusting insects that are known to carry and spread a wide range of diseases and viruses. Some of the illnesses that you can catch from a roach infestation include:

  • Leprosy
  • Cholera
  • Salmonellosis
  • Dysentery
  • Gastroenteritis
  • Campylobacteriosis
  • Listeriosis

Roaches can spread these harmful illnesses by leaving their urine and droppings all over your house. Some people are also allergic to cockroach droppings, which could cause a severe reaction or an asthma attack.

How To Remove Factors That Attract Cockroaches

Roaches enjoy warm and moist places. They will also come into your home if they sense there's food inside. To keep cockroaches from entering your house, you should:

  • Keep all dry food in airtight containers.
  • Fix any leaky faucets or pipes around your home.
  • Sweep and mop your floors often to ensure no food particles are left behind.
  • Seal up any gaps or cracks around your house.
  • Keep a tight lid on your indoor and outdoor trash cans.

Cockroaches need food, shelter, and water to live. If you take away these necessities, they will go somewhere to try and find them.
